DG Shipping Sea-Time & COP Preliminary Eligibility Checker

Screen your sea-time against common DG Shipping / STCW thresholds. Final eligibility depends on official assessment of approved service, certificates, courses, watchkeeping records, TRB/TAR and medical fitness.

Enter service qualifying for the selected target. Officer promotion requires service after the prerequisite CoC; cadet routes require approved onboard training and watchkeeping records.
Min Required: 500 GT
Enter continuous numbers only without commas or spaces (e.g. 25000).

Draft Survey & Hydrostatic Trim Calculator

Six-point drafts, mark corrections, standard trim corrections (Nemoto), density adjustment and estimated cargo on board. Use vessel-approved hydrostatic data and operating limits.

Enter your vessel data. Results update automatically when required inputs are complete. Load Supramax Example uses practice values.

Each apparent mean updates automatically when both port and starboard readings are entered. Corrected drafts, displacement and cargo results update automatically once all required inputs are complete.

Readings must use the same keel datum as the hydrostatic tables. Apply any vessel-specified datum correction before entering drafts. Use an upright vessel or vessel-approved list corrections.

1. Observed 6-Point Draught Readings (Metres) Visual Marks

Forward (Fwd) —
Midships (Mid) —
Aft (Aft) —
Midships Heel Difference: — Apparent Mean = (P + S) / 2
2. Draft Mark Distance Corrections to Perpendiculars Stem & Stern

If draught marks are not located exactly on the perpendiculars, enter distances (m). Leave as 0.00 if marks are on FP/AP or if already pre-corrected.

Fwd mark offset (+ aft / − fwd of FP)
Mid mark offset (+ fwd / − aft)
Aft mark offset (+ fwd / − aft of AP)
How mark corrections are calculated
Midships correction = apparent trim × dM / mark spacing. Add this signed correction to the observed midships mean.
Apparent trim = aft observed mean − forward observed mean (positive by stern).
Mark spacing = LBP − dF − dA. Forward correction = −apparent trim × dF / mark spacing; aft correction = +apparent trim × dA / mark spacing.
3. Dock Water Density & Hydrostatic Particulars Automatic Interpolation
Standard benchmark: 1.0250 t/m³
Reference density for displacement, TPC and MTC in the vessel tables.
Choose the convention printed in your vessel table. Convert AP-based coordinates to midships first.

Copy the lower and upper rows from your vessel table. Values between them are interpolated automatically; the target draft comes from your six readings and mark offsets.

Key root causes for elevated specific fuel oil consumption per MAN Energy Solutions & WinGD technical service bulletins:

Scavenge Air & Turbocharger
  • Air Cooler Fouling: Check scavenge air cooler differential pressure (ΔP > 50 mmWG).
  • Scavenge Temp: Elevated scavenge temp (> 45°C) reduces charge air mass flow.
  • T/C Turbine Fouling: Perform dry/wet turbine washing; check turbine backpressure.
Fuel Injection System
  • Injector Nozzles: Check opening pressure and spray atomization; replace worn tips.
  • Fuel Temp & Viscosity: Ensure correct viscosity at engine inlet (10 – 14 cSt for HFO/VLSFO).
  • VIT / Pump Timing: Verify Variable Injection Timing rack index and pump lead setting.
Combustion & Compression
  • Compression Pressure: Check Pcomp and Pmax balance across all cylinders.
  • Piston Rings: Worn rings or blow-by reduce effective expansion ratio and increase SFOC.
  • Exhaust Valve Seating: Inspect hydraulic pushrod clearances and valve burning.

Category II Lubricants (VLSFO)

MAN Energy Solutions SL2020-694 mandates Category II 40 BN cylinder oils for continuous operation on 0.50% S VLSFO to prevent detergent depletion and deposit formation in ring grooves.

Cold Corrosion at Part Load

When slow steaming (<40% MCR), cylinder liner wall temperatures dip below the sulfuric acid dew point (130–160°C). Electronic lubricators must boost feed rate or jacket water temperatures must be raised.

Low-Ash Operation (LSMGO / Gas)

Using high-BN cylinder oil (>40 BN) with 0.10% S LSMGO or LNG gas fuel creates excessive unburned calcium ash (CaCO₃), resulting in bore polishing and sudden piston ring collapse. Use BN 15–25 oil.
